HBO’s The Last of Us casts Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey as new role

Craig Mazin and HBO The last of us looks like it will largely stick to the story featured in developer Naughty Dog The last of us, which takes Joel and Ellie through a fungus-ravaged United States. But judging by the trailer, there is at least one big exception: Melanie Lynskey.

Monday The last of us The teaser trailer also served as a casting announcement for yellow jackets stars Melanie Lynskey in the HBO series. She plays a character named Kathleen, a “ruthless leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City,” an HBO representative told Polygon. Joel and Ellie travel across a large part of the country at the games, from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, before heading to Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. His trip through the middle of the country is largely omitted from the game, but it looks like the HBO show will fill in some of those gaps. Between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Jackson, Wyoming, it looks like Ellie and Joel will also be visiting Kansas City, Missouri.

If you have been following The last of us‘casting announcements, this might not be news to you. HBO confirmed to IGN in early August that Henry (played by Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard), two notable characters from the game, will meet Ellie and Joel in Kansas City instead of Pittsburgh, the original location. At the time, HBO said that Sam and Henry were “hiding from a revolutionary movement seeking revenge,” and it appears that Kathleen of Lynskey is the ringleader behind that group.

Usually when I’m thinking The last of us, the word “revolutionary” is linked to the fireflies, the group that fought the oppressive control of the government and the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) in the country’s quarantine zones. But Kathleen’s group is more like the Hunters, who were basically all of the nameless baddies in the game, and the ones that go after Ellie, Joel, Sam, and Henry in that famous armored truck.

My theory is that the HBO show will strengthen this group a bit more, making them feel more organized under Kathleen’s direction. Of course, that’s all speculation; I’m not sure we’ll get answers for a few episodes. The last of us10-episode season, which premieres in 2023, HBO said.
