New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will likely miss several games with a severe ankle sprain, sources say

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts. — New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is dealing with what doctors have diagnosed as a severe ankle sprain that would require many to undergo surgery, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jones is likely to miss several games, sources said, and he and the Patriots are still discussing their options and how best to proceed.

Jones, who suffered the sprain Sunday in a 37-26 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens, deflected questions about his recovery schedule when asked about it Monday.

In a video conference with reporters from the Patriots’ facility, Jones repeated the words “day to day” or “day to day” nine times.

“I’m just going to take it day by day, get my treatment and do what I do. I’m just going to see how I feel,” he said. “If you have more questions like that, talk to the coach [Bill] Belichick. I think he likes those questions.”

Jones, who was in considerable pain when he left the field Sunday, laughed and cracked a smile as he said the line about Belichick, who is famous for disdaining discussing injuries with reporters.

The Patriots (1-2) visit the Green Bay Packers (2-1) on Sunday, and Belichick said earlier Monday that he wouldn’t speculate whether Jones could be placed on injured reserve.

Echoing those thoughts, Jones said, “A lot of times, you really don’t know exactly what’s going on. You just have to get your treatment and hopefully you feel better the next day and grow from there… I’m just waiting for the time here, I just let it play out, seeing how I feel. Honestly, I’m just trying to get to tomorrow and get my rehab going.”

Veteran Brian Hoyer is the Patriots’ primary backup, and fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe out of Western Kentucky has been the No. 1 pick. 3 option.

Veteran captain Matthew Slater was asked Monday how the Patriots might respond if they don’t have Jones.

“I hope we don’t have to find that out, but I think we’ll respond in the right way,” he said. “We’re very early in our season, and if we don’t handle it the right way, this could get away from us.”

Hoyer has lost 11 consecutive starts (from 2016 to 2020), which is the longest active streak in the NFL.

Meanwhile, the Packers have won 14 straight regular-season home games, also the longest active streak.
